Babbling Baby Bridger Boy

I'll tell you my question first and explain later. My question is How do you know when your baby says his first word?

My step sister who is about 2 talks quite a bit but I cannot understand a word she says but my dad and her mother know what she's saying. Same with my niece I try to understand but I don't. Everyone says you can understand your child and I can understand what Bridger is trying to say to me but I'm sure people will think I'm out of my mind when I tell them what he's saying.

We wave to Bridger and say "bye bye". Bridger shakes his hand back and says "dah dah". I know that he can imamate us but at 11 months does he know what this means? He handed me a picture of a cat on it and I pointed at the cat and said "Cat". Bridger pointed back at the cat and said "Ca Ca Cat". He said it so clear that I’m sure anyone would understand, so does this mean his first word is cat? I would think not because I've tried numerous times to get him to say it again and it's doesn't happen. He's been saying Da Da since he learned that sound comes out of his mouth and we do refer to Dad as Da Da. Not only does he call his dad da da, he also calls everything that he doesn't have a word for Da Da. So if dad or daddy is his first word how will I know he calls everything that. He says Ma Ma to but only when he's crying. Is this just how he says I'm hurt or does he want Ma Ma? We refer to his bottle as Ba Ba, now I'm pretty sure he knows what ba ba means when we say ba ba he freaks out and reaches out for his bottle. When his bottle is empty he gives it to me and says ba ba. I know that means he wants me to refill his bottle. Would you consider ba ba his first word? I don't know it's all confusing to me. I need some motherly advice. This really isn't a big deal but when I'm home all day taking care of this baby what else would I think about. My brain is getting slower and my social skills are dwindling.

This baby can talk more than me.  He will open his books and point to the words and start babbling. I know he is imitating me but it’s so cute. He can go on for quite awhile turning pages and telling stories.

I think if it's a word you understand, it counts. bah bah certainly sounds like a word--even if in his head it means "drink" or "fill 'er up" it still has meaning. Same with "cat". He saw the picture, knew that the word you said meant that thing in the picture. Even if he doesn't repeat it, it was a word that he applied to a specific thing, so it had meaning. And whether ma ma means you or means comfort and love, doesn't really matter. What matters is that he knows you will help him when he needs it. You're a good mom!
